Coldplay‘s tenth album Moon Music will drop Friday October 04; the first single, feelslikeimfallinginlove, is out now. The band performed the tune for the first time last night, during their sold out stadiums show at Budapest’s Puskás Aréna.
So far, Coldplay’s sustainability measures on their current tour have produced 59% less CO2e emissions than the previous stadium tour, and the release of Moon Music adheres to that initiative. It’s the world’s first album on a 140g EcoRecord LP, with each copy made from nine recycled PET-plastic bottles recovered from post-consumer waste; this will prevent the manufacture of more than 25 tonnes of virgin plastic, and provide an 85% reduction in manufacturing process CO2 emissions per kilogram, compared to traditional 140g vinyl.
As well, the band have teamed up again with The Ocean Cleanup to create an additional format: the Notebook Edition EcoRecord LP. The rPET for this one contains 70% river plastic, intercepted by The Ocean Cleanup from the Rio Las Vacas in Guatemala, and prevented from making it to the Gulf of Honduras and the Atlantic Ocean. The compact disc editions will be the first on EcoCD, which is made from 90% recycled polycarbonate sourced from post-consumer waste streams. This provides at least a 78% CO2/kg emission reduction, and avoids the manufacture of more than five tonnes of virgin plastic.
In a further effort to reduce waste, the first edition individually numbered run of Moon Music – both EcoRecord LP and EcoCD – will be limited, and produced at a higher specfication than any future runs. The Notebook Edition comes in a casebound hardback book which is a replica of Chris Martin‘s original studio notebook, with 28 pages of notes, lyrics, and illustrations from the writing and recording process. It also contains additional voice notes and demos from the recording sessions.
Moon Music is Coldplay’s first album since 2021’s Music Of The Spheres, which produced the US number one single My Universe, and which was nominated for Album Of The Year at the Grammy Awards. Music Of The Spheres has racked up more than four billion streams.
