Back in 2022, Toto axeman Steve Lukather‘s son Trevor got hitched to Madison Cain, whose father is Journey keysman Jonathan Cain. During a road trip, they were listening to some vintage tunes, and heard Journey’s 1986 nugget It Could Have Been You for the first time. Says Trev, “We were just blown away. I loved the funkiness of it, and Steve Perry‘s vocals were just insane. We kept playing that song on repeat.”
Enter serendipity, with the end result being Steve Perry singing on a cover of that tune, by Trev’s band The Effect, which also includes Phil Collins‘ son Nic. It’s the first single from The Effect’s new album, which will drop later this year. And Perry seems to be digging it: “They did an amazing version of it. In my opinion, it’s completely current, refreshed, and ready to go out there and do some damage.”
It would seem that the Lukather and Collins apples did not fall far from the trees.
