Following the massive success of the Brothers In Arms album and tour, with media calling Dire Straits “The biggest band in the world”, Mark Knopfler felt that the accent was on popularity rather than the music, and that he needed a rest. The result was that in September of 1988, he announced that the band were splitting. They got back together in 1991 and recorded On Every Street, which turned out to be their last studio album; they broke up for reals in 1995.
In 1982, Dire Straits put out an album titled after Mark Knopfler’s dedication to art over airplay. The 14 minute centerpiece from Love Over Gold – Telegraph Road – is a perfect example of that mindset. And there actually is a Telegraph Road, in Detroit; Knopfler formulated the tune while their tour bus was traveling on it.
