Finest At Sea will host the 15th Annual Fishermen Helping Kids With Cancer Herring Sale in Victoria on Saturday, January 17, 2026, beginning at 7:00 a.m. - sharp.
Each year, eager supporters line up early for their share of 20,000 lbs of fresh Pacific herring, and the event typically sells out quickly. Volunteers will once again be on hand to fill pails and coolers, helping make this year’s fundraiser the most successful yet.
100% of proceeds from the annual sale are donated to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, supporting programs and supplies that improve the quality of life for kids undergoing cancer treatment. To date, the event has raised more than $1.5 million.
Why Kids’ Cancer?
Fishermen Helping Kids With Cancer (FHKWC) was inspired by the courageous daughter of a BC commercial fisherman. After witnessing her determined three‑year battle with cancer, a fellow fisherman proposed a community herring sale to support children facing similar challenges. Although she helped plan the inaugural event, she passed away at age 17—just days before the first sale in 2011.
Despite improved survival rates over the past two decades, cancer remains the leading disease‑related cause of death among children. FHKWC works closely with doctors and oncology staff at BC Children’s Hospital to fund essential programs and comfort items not covered by the hospital. To date, the herring sale alone has contributed more than $1.5 million directly to kids in treatment.
Why Herring?
Pacific herring are a vibrant green‑and‑silver finfish with delicate off‑white flesh and a rich, full flavour thanks to their high oil content. They are ideal for grilling, pickling, smoking, canning, or salting.
The herring stocks off the East Coast of Vancouver Island are in excellent condition and are rated a “Best Choice” by both the Ocean Wise Program and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, which monitor the health and sustainability of commercial fisheries.
