Police say two brothers killed by police in a shootout outside a Victoria bank were there for an armed confrontation, not robbery.
An investigation by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit says 22-year-old Isaac Auchterlonie and his brother, Matthew, waited around for 11 minutes after they were given the cash with the objective of having an armed confrontation with police. Police say the Bank of Montreal location was chosen at random, and that the suspects had been plotting a violent incident since at least 2019. In the trunk of the suspects vehicle, police discovered over 30 improvised explosive devices, as well as several other firearms and extra ammunition. Despite uncertainty at the time, police say the two men acted alone.
Three Saanich police officers and three Victoria police officers were wounded in the incident.
