Royals hockey host Downie Wenjack Night, Nov.24
This past October, The Victoria Royals announced they’ve partnered with The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund for the 2017-18 hockey season. The Royals game on Friday November 24 against the Seattle Thunderbirds will be Downie Wenjack Fund Night.
Mike Downie, Gord’s brother and co-founder of the fund, will be in attendance at the game. He’s also the co-creator of the graphic novel and film, The Secret Path. The project tells the story of Chanie Wenjack, an Ojibway boy who died while running away from a residential school in 1966.
In a special pre-game ceremony, Mike Downie will be presented with a custom-painted goalie mask by Victoria artist Travis Michael. Michael designed two identical masks for this night, paying tribute to Gord Downie’s past as a hockey goalie and artist, and will reflect the story of The Secret Path.
One of the masks will be available online at CHL Auctions. Proceeds raised from the auction will go towards the Fund.
The Victoria Royals Downie Wenjack Fund Night will also include a selection of merchandise available for purchase at the Royals Team Store. 100% of proceeds go to the Fund.
Royals players will wear a special Downie Wenjack Fund sticker on the back of their helmets.
