Steven Spielberg will revive ’80s series ‘Amazing Stories’
Apple working on a deal to buy a new version of Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, the sci-fi anthology series that ran on NBC from 1985 to 1987.
The 10-episode order for Amazing Stories will make the series available for streaming. Apple reportedly has budgeted about $1 billion to spend on programming to compete with streaming services like Netflix.
Spielberg is expected to serve as executive producer of the new version. The first Amazing Stories won critical praise, but it was not big in the ratings success when it first ran on NBC.
Thanks to Netflix and other streaming services like Amazon.com the sci-fi anthology genre has cachet in the TV industry. The Netflix anthology series Black Mirror won Emmys for outstanding writing and outstanding television movie for the episode “San Junipero.”
