Shayne Kaye

The Q's Late Shift (midnight-5:30 am) and Weekend Evenings (6:00 pm-midnight)

Shayne was born right here in Victoria, although he spent most of his life in the bustling metropolis that is Ladner*.

“Shaynebow Brite,” as he (reluctantly) responds to, loves apples, bananas, coffee, chocolate, historical cartography, cycling, bunnies, 16-hour naps, “Epic Concert Adventures,” using ellipses, and being very, very random. He hates onions and is terrified of bees. We’re talking “flailing his arms and screaming like a little girl” terrified. It’s not pretty.

Shayne is scared of Facebook and Twitter, doesn’t watch TV or movies, and is convinced that technology peaked with Duck Hunt and Pac-Man (he actually holds the Ms. Pac-Man high score on the Spirit Of British Columbia). He also attempts photography and WILL beat you at Monopoly and air hockey. Seriously...he’s ruthless.

Most importantly, Shayne is weird. Example #1: when we first set up these individual pages, The Boss specifically gave Shayne posting guidelines of “normal according to people ON EARTH.” Example #2: he’s a Flyers fan.

* Where? You know that flat spot on the left when you get off the ferry in Tsawwassen? That’s Ladner. You’ve probably been to its bus depot. Other notable ex-Ladnerite: QMS producer Mike Evenson.

Deep Purple Legends Of Rock Weekend

We're getting ramped up for the Deep Purple show on Saturday, February 25th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre with another Legends Of Rock Weekend!

I'll post some goodies here throughout the weekend...enjoy!

---

Child In Time origins

Child In Time is by far my favourite Deep Purple song. Where did it come from? Apparently Jon Lord was playing a riff on keyboard and Ian Gillan loved it. The riff was from a song by It's A Beautiful Day called "Bombay Calling".

Who Do We Think We Are

I've always been a fan of this album...not just for the songs, but for the album cover. The inside cover. It's pretty simple, newspaper clippings on the band from around the world, but I think it's really cool.

Lunar Eclipse - December 10, 2011

Alright folks, considering I'm probably the space-nerdiest one here at the Rock Research Centre, I'll do my duty and give you a full run-down of tonight's total lunar eclipse.

First off, this is going to be your last chance to see a dark and/or red moon until April 15, 2014. This one also has the benefit of being a late-morning eclipse, as opposed to the last few 2-3am ones. We also should...HOPEFULLY...have a decently clear night tonight to see it.

Basically...this is going to be your best chance to see something awesome like this for a long, long time.

Here's what we're potentially in for...

August 28, 2007 - taken from Clover Point:

December 21, 2010 - taken from Mt. Tolmie:

For the 2007 one, I was just starting to try out photography and shooting with a "less-than-stellar" point-and-shoot camera, and for the 2010 one, fog and clouds moved in RIGHT as the total eclipse part started (hence the blurry-ness). With that in mind, I'm REALLY crossing my fingers for this one.

Here's what you need to know:

• Look to the west/northwest
• The partial eclipse will begin at 4:45am
• "Totality" (moon completely eclipsed and hopefully turning reddish) will go from 6:06am-6:57am
• After that, it'll be back to a partial eclipse until moonset, which is 8:00am for us tomorrow.

This site is pretty great for visualizing what's about to happen for eclipses (plus meteor showers and other cool space stuff): Shadow & Substance

Here's some eclipse info from National Geographic.

Finally, here's an attempt at a time-lapse video I made after shooting the one last year:

If the weather holds up (it's supposed to start getting cloudy by morning) and I don't freeze to death (low of minus-two?!), I'll have photos up ASAP. I'm just trying to decide where to go this time.

Wish me luck!

Vacation Photos YAY!

I just had a week off, so I decided to head to the mainland to see my parents and take it easy for a week. I made it out a few places though, camera in hand...

The George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island (beside Ladner, where I was staying)...

Stanley Park...

The BC Lions Grey Cup celebration party at BC Place...

Good times.

You can check out the rest by clicking one of the photos or just going to my Flickr photostream here.

Election Time!

Yup, time for another election. This one is for right here in Victoria, with everything from school board members to mayors up for grabs. Everything except the issue of amalgamation, of course...

Confused about everything going on? Well, that's not surprising, considering apparently there are ~250 candidates running for the various positions. Lemme try and help a tiny bit.

City of Victoria's info page - for the info on when/how to vote

Times Colonist election page - with lots of candidate info and news

Victoria Chamber Of Commerce - more candidate info

And, for fun, Jack Knox's recent article about the election.

Now that you're completely confused and/or frustrated (or some of this helped and you're actually feeling optimistic, which would be awesome), I think you've earned a tune...

Oh, and if you know of any other good sources you think would benefit voters, please send me an email. Thanks!

Big Sugar in Victoria

As anyone who knows me can testify, I've been looking forward to seeing Big Sugar for a LONG time, and was VERY excited/giddy in advance of the show. I actually saw them in Vancouver at the Commodore a couple nights ago, but more on that another day.

Yeah, this was one of those "wow...just...wow." shows. It didn't hurt that I got there early and set up shop right at the stage for a prime viewpoint. Such an incredible show. The setlist had more of my favourites than the Vancouver show I saw, actually (Cop A Plea, So Not Over, and Joe Louis).

You can see a bunch of shots over on my Flickr.

Here are a couple samplers:

Still to come: all the photos from Wide Mouth Mason, plus shots of both bands from the Vancouver show. Oh, and I'll definitely have some coming from when I see Roger Daltrey perform "Tommy" in Vancouver in two days. Yup, been looking forward to this week for a long time.

October 26 update: Wide Mouth Mason shots are up. You can see the full set here.

A couple of my faves:

100.3 The Q is The Island's Rock. We don't take ourselves too seriously, and aren't a "boys club" like some stations. Men and women who love rock enjoy Q music and find our mediocre entertainment mostly passable.

The Q mixes classics from artists like Aerosmith, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones with newer rock from the likes of U2, the Foo Fighters and the Dave Matthews Band.
