Victoria to Kelowna In a Day with Ryan Awram

IMG_1609 Pacific Coastal Airlines made it’s inaugural flight from Victoria International Airport (YYJ) to Kelowna (YLW) on Monday November 23, 2015. Pacific Coastal Airlines’ new non-stop service operates twice a day Monday to Friday, and once a day on the weekend. Round-trip airfare is very reasonable.

I spent the day in Kelowna touring wine country with tour guide Alexa Creelman, Communications Co-ordinator of Tourism Kelowna. My radio buddy Pol Plastino from across the hall at The Rock Research Centre in The Zone @91.3 was along for the day, too.

Stay tuned for details from 100.3 The Q! for your chance to win something similar to my Kelowna In a Day itinerary.

IMG_16517:30am – Depart from Victoria International Airport, arriving in Kelowna (YLW) at 8:35am

Next, depart YLW for a scenic drive through Kelowna’s orchard, wine and golf country en route to Downtown Kelowna for a morning coffee at Pulp Fiction  Coffeehouse.

10:15am – Head across Okanagan Lake to Quails’ Gate Estate Winery for a tasting and early lunch at Old Vines Restaurant. The story of this family run winery, from simple grape growers to one of wine country’s most successful wineries is part of the tour.

IMG_165212:45pm – Follow the vines up the hill to the iconic Mission Hill Family Estate. Wine tour and tasting led by one of their sommeliers.

The cellar at Mission Hill Winery is breathtaking. It has the dramatic atmosphere of an underground lair of a James Bond movie villain.

2:15pm – Drive down the hill for another unique wine experience at The Hatch. It’s a tasting emporium in an inviting rustic ‘shack from the future’. IMG_16534pm – Head downtown to Kelowna’s Cultural District in Downtown Kelowna. Arrive at Okanagan Spirits to taste 25 varieties produced in their traditional copper-pot stills. These include brandies, liqueurs, Grappa, Aquavit, gin, Absinthe, whisky and vodka.

There’s a lot to see (and eat) in downtown Kelowna. The revitalized district near Waterfront Park has tons of restaurants, coffee joints and shopping.

5pm – Our tour guide Alexa from Tourism Kelowna took us to The Curious Café for dinner. I really love the laid-back vibe in this pizza and Italian- inspired restaurant. Who can argue with brick oven pizza with marinara, spicy salami, parmigiano, provolone, pickled fennel?

6:25pm – check-in at Kelowna International for the return flight home to Victoria on-board Pacific Coastal Airlines.

Thanks to Alexa from Tourism Kelowna for putting together an excellent itinerary (plus being our designated driver and keeping Pol and me entertained), Josh from The Hatch, Amy Zurrer from Quails’ Gate, Ingo Grady at Mission Hill, and Mike from Okanagan Spirits. And congratulations Pacific Coastal Airlines for adding this new route to Kelowna from Victoria.

  1. you missed an excellent winery called Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery, in West Kelowna (formerly Westbank). Family owned with an excellent selection of wines. My wife and I prefer their reds…

    • I know, I missed a ton of wineries. I’ll have to check out Mt. Boucherie Estate. I know Quails’ Gate and The Hatch are located near Mt. Boucherie. Thanks for the tip, Mike! ~Ryan
