A week after fans heard the news that The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie has brain cancer, Canadian sales of the band’s album catalog dramatically spiked from 340 copies sold a week before to 5,200 in the week ending May 26.

That’s a jump of more than 1,300 percent according to Nielsen Music as reported by Billboard online.

The two-disc Best Of compilation from 2005, Yer Favourites, re-entered the Billboard Albums chart at No. 6 and hit No. 1 on the top Catalog albums chart with 2,500 album sales.

Three other Tragically Hip albums re-entered in the top 200: 1992’s Fully Completely at No. 90, 1991’s Road Apples at No. 137 and 1989’s Up To Here at No. 165.

In the U.S., the Hip sold 1,000 albums in the week ending May 26. That’s up 901 percent from the week before. Total on-demand audio and video streams rose 386 percent to 501,000.

The Hip’s new album, Man Machine Poem, comes out June 17.

The Tragically Hip play Victoria on Friday July 22nd.
