I have to hand it to Dan Rather: he’s one cool cat. The legendary newshound talked at length with Sammy Hagar about his experiences with Van Halen for his new AXS television effort, The Big Interview, which airs tomorrow at 5pm Pacific, and although he was sitting beside the guy who admitted long ago that he couldn’t drive 55, and although he was a passenger with said non-55er in the world’s fastest street legal automobile, he remained cool as a cuke.
Also on the show, the Red Rocker debuted a new tune, Inner Child, to which he referred as “a little lullaby”. Performing it on a 12 string guitar, Hagar explained that it was written following some family therapy sessions. He said it’s “one of the most wonderful things I’ve ever done, because I got to hear how my kids really think about their mom and dad.”
After playing the new song, Hagar said, “It’s really hard for me to sing that song, because it’s very deep. It’s about me. It’s about my kids, about my grandkids, about my mom and dad … I’ve found out that all my problems are being caused in life by my inner child. That little guy that was hurt as a child, and felt those things. Even though I’ve accomplished everything and more than I could have ever dreamed, that little guy is still stirrin’ around in there, you know what I mean? It’s like, you know, you think you’re above it until someone pushes that little trigger.”
Also on AXS, the fifth instalment of Hagar’s Rock And Roll Road Trip, featuring Nancy Wilson of Heart and Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, airs Sunday at 6PM Pacific. In the trailer, Wilson posits how the appearance of bands like Nirvana and Alice In Chains signalled that “the whole 80s thing was completely kaput.”
