Robert Plant [Hollowverse]

Plant/Zep fans get a little treat from PBS this weekend, as the long-running Austin City Limits airs a concert by Robert Plant, performed with the Sensational Space Shifters, the backing band with whom he worked on 2014’s lullaby and … The Ceaseless Roar.  The show was recorded in March, and eight of the thirteen songs they performed made the final cut.

According to the show’s info page, the band played three songs from lullaby:  Rainbow, Turn It Up and the traditional folk song Little MaggieIn The Mood was taken from 1983’s The Principle Of Moments, and the other four songs — Whole Lotta Love, The Lemon Song, Black Dog and Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You — are from Plant’s Led Zeppelin canon.

During the recording sessions, Austin resident Plant talked about how the city’s well-known musical diversity inspired lullaby.  “There are no walls in this musical world … everybody had a side trip here and there, me mostly here,” he said from the stage, calling the record a “reflection of all the things we traverse and move through. When I came to live here, I saw a different picture, a bunch of colors.”

Austin City Limits began its 42nd season two weeks ago with a concert by Paul Simon. Plant had appeared on the show once before, in Season 28. His latest appearance will air this Saturday.
