Big Bad John’s in the Strathcona Hotel is a fine place to hang with friends, let your hair down and immerse yourself in the exquisite rarefied atmosphere of an authentic hillbilly watering hole. And if you’re a fan of bras and peanuts, well — even better. It’s been that way since 1962, and today starting at noon, it’s the first annual Big Bad John’s Day. Every customer gets a free limited edition print showing some of the history of Big Bad John’s, and if someone manages to grab your nuts, no problem: they’re free all day.
Originally designed to cater to tourists on the way to the World’s Fair in Seattle, Big Bad John’s has become one of Victoria’s enduring landmarks.
Joel and Gerry dropped in to The Rock Research Center yesterday to tell us more about this funky watering hole, what’s happening today during Big Bad John’s Day, and how that tradition of bras hanging from the ceiling originated — among other things.
