The Simpsons have never shied away from lampooning hockey over the years, but we’ve never seen a real hockey player as a guest on the show. That’s about to change, as NHL icon Wayne Gretzky shows up in Springfield.
The kids over there at NHL.com say that he’ll appear on the show in an episode which is slated to air Sunday December 11. In a chat with the site, The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean said “We reached out to him. We were looking for heroes of the winter like Santa Claus and Jack Frost, and there couldn’t be a bigger hockey hero than Wayne Gretzky.” He continued, “People argue about a lot of things, but they never argue about who’s the greatest hockey player. It’s always him,” Jean continued. “I don’t think there is anybody better at anything that Gretzky is as a hockey player. He had a lot of great stories and it was a real pleasure to meet him.”
Gretzky laid down his The Simpsons voiceover earlier this year. There is, of course, no word on what his appearance on the show will entail.
