When former Facebook media relations person Brandee Barker climbed aboard her Uber jitney the other day, her pilot turned out to be someone who might be considered a minor celebrity — especially by those of us who were around when America Online was mailing out enough floppy disks and CD ROMs to cover the planet three meters deep. You know, back when the Earth’s crust was still cooling.

That’s right. Elwood Edwards has a side gig as an Uber driver in Cleveland. Which rocks. Cleveland, that is — and, come to think of it, also the fact that he has a side gig with Uber.
Says Barker, “We didn’t discuss how long he had been driving, but I assumed it was a side job and one he enjoyed to meet and talk with people. He told me he was a news editor at the NBC affiliate in Cleveland. And then he offered up that I may recognize his voice as the You’ve Got Mail [guy] — he said he was paid $200 for the voiceover. I completely geek freaked and asked if he would do the video.”
“Needless to say Elwood got a five-star Uber rating from me.”
Elwood currently works at a news station in Ohio, WKYC-TV. Legend has it that his wife was a customer service rep in 1989 at the soon-to-be America Online and she volunteered him for the job.
