There are two things of which there is no shortage in Hollywood: sequels and remakes. Okay, there are other things, too, but this is about a remake — yes, add yet another to the towering pile.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Starship Troopers is due for a reboot. The 1997 film was one of the first to adopt the “introspective humor” which currently permeates a lot of Hollywood remakes; it brought a lot of satire to bear on the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein. Word on the street is that the latest film will adhere a lot more closely to that seminal work, and as a matter of fact, it could be different enough from what has gone before to prompt Columbia Pictures to turn it into a completely new franchise.
Indeed, no one from the 1997 film is on board with the new one. Rather, it’s being adapted by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the same pair who wrote the soon-to-be-unleashed Baywatch film.
