Two years ago, producers of a planned sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner took the unusual step of publicly offering the lead role to its original star, Harrison Ford. He accepted, and the untitled production came to life.
The creative team behind Blade Runner 2 has officially announced next year’s sequel will be called Blade Runner 2049.
The filmmakers revealed the title via Twitter with a photo of stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, along with director Denis Villeneuve and producer Ridley Scott (who directed the original). Jared Leto and Robin Wright will also star in the film.
The sequel will reportedly take place decades after the original, which was set in the year 2019. Harrison Ford reprise his role as replicant hunter Rick Deckard.
Blade Runner 2049 will be released Oct. 6, 2017.
