Victoria’s Michael Saunders, who is a Toronto Blue Jays outfielder, is within a stone’s throw of getting the final spot on the American League all-star team — he’s one of five finalists.
“You get to watch the all-star game on TV and it crosses your mind sometimes how cool it would be to be able to play in that game,” says Saunders. “I didn’t ever think I would have the opportunity to play along with such names that are in the all star game. It is such an honour to even be mentioned.”
Saunders is doing pretty well, to put it mildly: this season is the best of his career, with 15 HRs and 38 RBIs during his first 77 games — a far cry from 2015, when he sat out most of the season with a left knee bone bruise.
Online voting for the final all-star slot ends tomorrow. After the first day of voting, Saunders was leading, thanks in part to a heavy Blue Jays social media campaign.
